What is EDI? A practical guide for leaders

What is EDI

Equity (or Equality), Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) are more than just a box-ticking exercise. They are the core components of a thriving and resilient organisation. Understanding these concepts is the first step toward building a truly inclusive workplace culture where every employee can flourish. So what is EDI? So let’s discover together…

This page breaks down what EDI means in a practical sense and why it’s a strategic imperative for your business.

Breaking down the core concepts – What is EDI? – Definitions

While often used together, Equality, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion have distinct meanings. Understanding each one is key to implementing them effectively.

equality by lea guzzo

Equality: The Legal Foundation

In the UK, equality is a legal requirement. The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone based on nine “protected characteristics”:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender Reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or Belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation

While equality sets the minimum standard, equity is the practice that helps us achieve it. That’s why I personally focus on Equity more than Equality. I.e. I am an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant.

Equity: Creating Fair Opportunities

This is about fairness and justice. Equity means acknowledging that we don’t all start from the same place and that different people need different resources to succeed. It’s about actively identifying and dismantling the barriers that prevent full participation, ensuring that processes for hiring, promotion, and development are impartial and just for everyone.

diversity what is EDI

Diversity: The Power of Difference

Diversity is about the richness of human differences in your organisation. This includes differences, which may be visible, such as race, gender, and age, as well as invisible ones like thinking styles, religion, educational background, sexual orientation, and life experience. A diverse organisation actively brings together people with a wide range of perspectives, which is one part of the key for innovation.

inclusion what is EDI

Inclusion: Making Diversity Work

This is the ‘how’. Inclusion is the practice of creating an environment where every individual feels valued, and empowered to bring their full, authentic self to work. It’s about fostering a culture of psychological safety where different perspectives are not just tolerated, but actively sought out. An inclusive culture is where diversity thrives, leading to better decision-making, greater collaboration, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Often there is some confusion between inclusion and diversity. Basically, having a diverse team is not good enough. You need to ensure you have an inclusive workspace so you can capitalise on this diversity. No point having a diverse team if some members are feeling excluded or cannot share their ideas with the rest of the team.

intersectionality what is EDI

Intersectionality: Recognising People’s Complex Identities

I also think that intersectionality is another important concept to help you on your journey. I have written a full page on this here, if you want to find out more.

Why EDI is a strategic imperative (Not just a ‘nice-to-have’)?

Embedding EDI into your organisation isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s a powerful driver of business success.

  • Innovation & Better Decisions: Diverse teams consistently outperform homogenous ones in problem-solving and decision-making. Tapping into a wide range of perspectives protects against groupthink and fuels creativity.
  • Talent Attraction & Retention: Today’s top talent -especially from younger generations- actively seeks employers who are demonstrably committed to creating an inclusive culture. A strong EDI strategy is crucial for attracting and keeping the best people.
  • Enhanced Performance & Productivity: When employees feel included and psychologically safe, their engagement, motivation, and productivity increase. They are more likely to perform better because they feel valued.
  • Increased Market Relevance: A workforce that reflects the diversity of your customers is better equipped to understand and serve their needs, opening new opportunities and building stronger brand loyalty.
  • Employees’ Wellbeing: When you have an inclusive workplace, the wellbeing of your staff is more likely to be great. They are happier at work. And who does not enjoy working with happier colleagues?
