Let's talk about intersectionality

I support progressive organisations and leaders to create more equitable and inclusive spaces. I believe that using an intersectional lens is critical to achieve this successfully and meaningfully. So let’s chat about what intersectionality means!

What is intersectionality?

Intersectionality is a framework within Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), acknowledging that individuals’ experiences are shaped by the interplay of various social identities – such as race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and more.

Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality emerged as a way to illustrate how systems of oppression overlap, particularly in the experiences of Black women, who face both racial and gender discrimination simultaneously.

Today, it’s a vital tool for understanding the complexity of our experiences and fostering truly inclusive environments.

About intersectionality

Why intersectionality matters?

Using an intersectional lens means we don’t just address single aspects of identity in isolation. Instead, we consider how these identities combine to affect experiences of privilege, marginalisation or oppression. For organisations, this approach is invaluable as it ensures that policies and practices are equitable and that no one is left out of the conversation.

The value of intersectionality

Embracing intersectionality isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a strategic advantage. When organisations consider the full spectrum of their employees’ and clients’ identities, they create more innovative, supportive, and effective environments.

Intersectionality leads to more meaningful engagement and better decision-making. I truly believe that using an intersectional lens is essential to create an inclusive workplace culture.

My commitment to intersectionality

I understand firsthand the importance of intersectionality. My experience as a LGBTQ+ woman from a multicultural and lower socioeconomic background has given me great insights into why bringing an intersectional lens is critical. People are multifaceted: we cannot only consider one aspect of their identity if we want to design truly inclusive workspaces and systems.

I bring this personal understanding into my EDI consulting, helping organisations not only to recognise the importance of intersectionality but also integrate it into their culture, practices, and policies.
